This architectural and interior design project in Berlin was carried out collaboratively within the firm Giorgio Gullotta Architekten, based in Hamburg. It shows the renovation and transformation of the Sly Hotel, located in the heart of the Friedrichshain, an iconic area of the German capital, marked by its industrial heritage and cultural vibrancy.
The intervention takes place within a complex and heterogeneous built environment. The project aimed to connect and unify six distinct volumes: four existing buildings (three former multi-storey factories and an early 20th-century residential house) as well as two new constructions. The architectural challenge was to create a coherent reading of the whole ensemble while respecting the individual identity of each building.
The renovation highlights the charm of the Berlin Altbau, characterised by generous volumes, high ceilings, and pronounced existing structures. These elements were preserved and reinterpreted through a contemporary industrial aesthetic, echoing the site’s history. Raw materials, exposed structures, and understated finishes interact with more contemporary interventions, creating a balance between heritage and modernity.
The heart of the project is organised around a large central greenhouse, designed as a unifying space. Serving as a true transitional and meeting area, it accommodates the hotel’s restaurant and ensures smooth connections between the different buildings. This greenhouse acts as a luminous lung, structuring circulation and providing a new centrality to the hotel complex.
Through this project, architecture and interior design come together to produce a harmonious, legible, and lively ensemble, where the transformation of the existing built fabric becomes the foundation for a powerful spatial experience, firmly rooted in the Berlin urban context.
